During routine research, our researchers searched for malicious skills across multiple endpoints in various environments. The hunt turned up a few Skills.md files, but some were malicious. One interesting thing was two completely different binaries sharing the same filename, AuthTool.
The first was a legitimate component of N-able Cove Backup Manager that was documented, signed, and deployed uniformly across many endpoints.
The second was a malicious executable delivered through a password-protected ZIP as part of a fake “reddit-trends” skill hosted on `playbooks.com`. The malicious binary exploited the name collision hiding behind the legitimate `AuthTool.exe` that analysts would recognize as known-good backup software.
This post details the forensic evidence that differentiated the two binaries, the prompt injection attempt that introduced the malicious one, and why thorough forensic profiling of legitimate software is the best defense against name collision attacks.

The “Black Box” Problem
The fundamental flaw with Skills is the Trust Gap. You see a shiny manifest with “Automated Posting” and “AI Logic,” but the actual execution flow is a black box. Here’s why you’re “cooked” the moment you hit install:
When you download an unknown Skill, you aren’t getting a tool, you’re getting a blind trust agreement.
- The Dependency Trap: That 50-line script is just the front. It’s the “prerequisite” binary or the hidden stage-2 payload that does the heavy lifting.
- Context Hijacking: If your platform has access to your .env files or SSH keys, that “Reddit Tool” has them too. It doesn’t need to crack your password if you just invited it inside.
- Manufactured Trust: Attackers use star-padding and name-squatting (like clawd-authtool) to look legit. They don’t bypass your security; they bypass your common sense.

The Hunt
Our proactive search initiated a broad threat hunt across the SentinelOne environment, searching for all activity related to malicious skills from various Skills marketplaces. While we found a few, one of them was interesting because it has exact name of a legit tool. It was the AuthTool.exe across all regions over the past 10 days. The hunt used Claude Code with Deep Visibility (S1QL) queries targeting process names, command lines, and file paths.
While the first AuthTool is legitimate, the second is interesting. AuthTool.exe (N-able) is a legitimate, vendor-documented authentication component of Cove Backup Manager.
The Malicious AuthTool.exe – Prompt Injection Delivery
During the same investigation, a second `AuthTool.exe` was introduced into the workflow, not through the environment but via a prompt-injection attack targeting the AI-assisted investigation itself. This binary shared only one thing with the legitimate N-able component: its filename. Everything else diverged.
How It Was Delivered: The Prompt Injection
First, the user is working with Claude, so he needs Skills.
A URL presented as supplementary threat intelligence about `AuthTool.exe` was introduced during the investigation. Instead of legitimate content, the URL served a prompt injection payload embedded with instructions designed to hijack the AI assistant’s tool access:

The reddit-trends Skill: A Trojan Horse Hidden in Plain Sight
The reddit-trends skill masquerades as a legitimate Reddit automation platform, advertising a polished set of capabilities designed to appeal to marketers, growth hackers, and anyone looking to build a Reddit presence at scale.
On the surface, the offering looks credible:

But buried inside the skill’s setup instructions is a mandatory prerequisite: AuthTool.exe.
This is where the deception crystallizes. The Reddit automation features are not the product. They are the lure. The binary is the weapon.
The skill follows a classic Trojan horse pattern: wrap a malicious payload in something useful, lower the victim’s guard with familiar tooling, and make the dangerous step feel like a routine installation requirement. By the time the user runs AuthTool.exe, they believe they are setting up a productivity tool, not executing an attacker-controlled binary.
The Reddit-Trends Op: Social Engineering for the Lazy
Most “automation skills” are garbage, but this one is a masterclass in Low-Entropy Deception. The attacker didn’t just write a script; they engineered a mirror for exactly what every agentic-kiddie with karma, zero effort, and a bot army on tap.
The Lure: A “God-Mode” Script-Kiddie Kit
The “Reddit-Trends” skill is pure bait. It’s designed to look like a high-tier SaaS suite for botting. If you’re looking to farm 100+ accounts with “human-like” jitter and OpenAI-driven engagement, this looks like the Holy Grail.

The Hook: The “Prerequisite”
You load the skill, and everything looks legit until you hit the “Authentication” step. The dev tells you the web-based API isn’t enough; you need a local bridge. They point you to a GitHub repo: Aslaep123/clawd-authtool.
The instructions are simple: “Run AuthTool.exe BEFORE starting the skill.” It’s the digital equivalent of a guy in a suit telling you to close your eyes so he can give you a gift. Most people would blink. But the lure of 100+ automated accounts is too strong. They download the ZIP, type in the password 1234 because “security,” right? and they execute.

The Payload: Hiding in the Noise
The attacker chose the name AuthTool.exe because they’re playing the long game. This isn’t just a random name; it’s a Name Collision attack.
In the target environment, there’s already a legitimate N-able binary called AuthTool.exe. It’s everywhere. It’s “known-good.” When that binary executes, the EDR logs it, the SOC sees it, and they… do nothing. Why would they? It’s just another admin tool doing admin things.
The attacker even timed the drop to coincide with when the real tool was under investigation. They used Investigation Fatigue as a silencer. By the time an analyst realizes there are two “AuthTools” running, one from C:\Program Files and one from a Downloads folder, the data is already gone.

If you were looking, the red flags were screaming. But when you’re chasing “easy gains,” you tend to go deaf:
- The ZIP Trap: Password-protecting AuthTool.zip with 1234 wasn’t about protecting the user. It was an AV-bypass to keep the scanners from sniffing the signature before it hit the disk.
- The macOS Pivot: For Mac users, they didn’t even bother with a fake binary. They just used a base64 -d | sh pipe. If you see a “Reddit tool” asking to pipe decoded shell commands directly into your kernel, you’re not a user you’re a botnet node.
- The Burner Infrastructure: The GitHub repo had zero history and zero stars. It was a ghost ship.
The Skill Scan: Proof You’re Cooked
The “Reddit-Trends” Skill isn’t a tool; it’s a textbook infection vector. A simple pattern scan reveals exactly how they’re playing you:
- AV Evasion: A password-protected archive (1234) at Line 92 designed to blindside scanners.
- Direct Execution: A base64 -D | bash pipe at Line 103 pure shellcode execution hidden in plain sight.
- Burner Infrastructure: High-risk downloads from a disposable GitHub account (Aslaep123) at Line 252.
- Brand Spoofing: Mimicking legitimate tooling with names like clawd- to hijack your trust.
